Rob Block -- Nidan

Instructor for Northwest Budokan
Master Kise’s Pacific Northwest Dojo.

Rob began his martial arts training at the age of 12 under the instruction of Grandmaster Solomon Yun. He trained for over two years in a progressive Tae Kwon Do style which also incorporated hapkido, judo, meditation and breathing techniques in addition to full contact sparring and sport fighting. Master Yun was an amazing athlete, martial artist and teacher. He worked very hard and was dedicated to developing strong values in his students such as respect, discipline, courtesy, hard work and self-improvement in addition to their physical abilities and skills. This is where Rob first gained his respect and passion for the martial arts.

After a 16 year hiatus from training, pursuing education, getting married, starting a family and working for a health insurance company for a number of years Rob began his martial arts journey again. He trained in a Kung-Fu style known as Shaolin Ssui (Chinese Combat Kung-fu) for 2 years. His training was highly intensive consisting of private lessons and instruction, group skill classes, physical strength and endurance training, forms (katas), self defense and escape techniques as well as breathing and meditation exercises. During this time his 2 older children Evan and Ashley began their martial arts training in the youth class at Harbour Point Middle School under the instruction of Sensei Jay Gravelle. Rob thoroughly enjoyed participating as a parent helper and was impressed by watching the classes. He was very interested in many of the similarities and differences that he observed between the two styles.

Rob left his prior studio in April of 2006 and joined the Adult Karate classes beginning his Shorin-Ryu training in May of 2006. He was excited to train in a new style as a beginner learning all that he could to progress in his knowledge and rank. He enjoys working hard, having fun and helping others learn.

Sensei Rob has been teaching youth karate classes at the Monroe and Mill Creek YMCAs and teaches adult classes at the Mill Creek YMCA and looks forward to working with his students every week!
