Randy Lord – Sandan

Sensei for Northwest Budokan
Master Kise’s Pacific Northwest Dojo.

Randy began his Shito-Ryu karate training in 1990 from sensei Richard Higbee of the Family Karate Center (FKC), in Lake Stevens, Washington. {The  FKC is affiliated with the International Karate Association, under the leadership of Soke Takeyuki Kubota}.  After receiving his purple belt, he transferred his training to Shihan Robert Martin at the main dojo in Everett, Washington.  After four years of training, he received his black belt in 1995.  He continued his training for an additional year until he suffered an ACL injury, requiring six months of surgery, physical therapy, and strength training.  The long layoff, plus two children approaching their teen years, resulted in a long-term break from karate, for almost eight years.

Randy had moved away from karate, until in 2003, he noticed Sensei Jay Gravelle teaching a new karate class at the Mukilteo YMCA.  After observing the traditional Shorin-Ryu karate (noticing it was very similar to his original style), plus Sensei Jay’s supportive teaching methods, Randy began training again.  He started from the very beginning, learning every new kata and self-defense technique, from white belt to black.  He was delighted to learn of the extensive weapons training opportunity, immersing himself in the bo (wooden staff), sai (three-pronged fork), and kama (grass cutting blade).  After 18 months of extensive training, with supportive help from both the upper and lower belts, he tested in front of Master Kise and received his Nidan ranking in the summer of 2005.

Randy enjoys teaching adults and children, male and female, and both the higher and lower belts.  Since he has so recently learned all the kata and weapons of the Shorin-Ryu style, he remembers how it feels to be a beginner and is able to explain the techniques to the newer students.  For the student transferring over from another style, he is able to quickly explain the differences, and what this new style is focusing on.

Randy’s students quickly learn that his upbeat, approachable style means that they can ask any questions and receive supportive feedback, all the while having fun.  Once he begins to perform a kata, work with a weapon, or start sparring, they realize that he is a serious student, always working to achieve mastery of his craft.
