Liam Yore -- Nidan

Sensei for
Northwest Budokan Master Kise’s Pacific Northwest Dojo.
Liam began martial arts training under
Sensei Michael Donovan (Sandan) at Chicago's Northwestern University dojo in
1993. Sensei Donovan taught the Matsubayashi style of Shorin-Ryu Karate, under
the auspices of the American Karate Federation. Advancing to the rank of 1st
Kyu (brown belt) under Sensei Donovan, Liam put his martial arts practice on
hold during the completion of his education.
In 2003, having relocated to Puget
Sound, Liam discovered the OMSKKF and Sensei Gravelle's class at the YMCA in
Mukilteo. Immediately noticing the similarities between the Matsumura and
Matsubayashi styles, Liam signed up, becoming the fourth student in the
fledgling NorthWest Budokan dojo. Although the styles had many
similarities, the fundamental differences ran deep, requiring Liam to go
back to the basics and start learning as if beginning anew. After over a
year of intensive study, Liam was tested by Grand Master Fusei Kise in
November of 2004 and was promoted to Sho-dan. Three more years of
dedication culminated when Sensei Gravelle promoted Liam to Ni-Dan in March
of 2007.
In the dojo, Liam is noted for the
intensity of his focus and for the attention paid to fundamental elements of
technique. His areas of interest include, first and foremost, kata, and
also weapons training in the form of Bo, Sai, Kama, and Nitan-bo. Physical
conditioning and practical fighting techniques also are emphasized.
Liam lives in Woodinville with his
wife, Liza, and two small children. He works in the Emergency Department at
Providence Everett Medical Center, and is an administrator at North Sound
Emergency Medicine.
