Jim Watson -- Nidan

Instructor for
Northwest Budokan Master Kise’s Pacific Northwest Dojo.
Jim started his martial arts training at the age of 14 with
Sensei Kirby Johnson (deceased), Yondan, in Kodokan Judo and Japanese Ju-Jitsu.
He earned a 3rd Kyu (brown belt) in both systems prior to leaving to attend
Purdue University. While in college, he had the opportunity to study several
different styles of martial arts, attempting to expand his knowledge of and
passion for the martial arts. Those styles include American Kick Boxing, Tae
Kwon Do, Hapkido, and Aikido. He also continued his Judo training as time
allowed.
Upon graduation in 1984, Jim relocated to Wichita, KS to
work for The Boeing Company as a design engineer. While there, Jim worked out
with a few different individuals from a variety of different systems trying to
find a style that peeked his interest. Over the course of 15 years he also
continued to work out with different Judo groups as life permitted.
In early 2000, Jim and his oldest son decided to take up
Fencing. Over the next six years, he completed in many local tournaments and a
several national events. He earned a “D” Rating in Epee and an “E” Rating in
Saber.
In the spring of 2006, Jim and his family moved to the
Seattle area for his work. In September 2006 his wife enrolled their younger
two sons in Shihan Jay Gravelle’s Mukilteo YMCA Youth Karate class. While
attending one of his son’s classes, Jim became intrigued. After learning more
about Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate, he decided to give it this system a
try. He began training in January 2007 and on February 20, 2010 he earned his
Shodan.
Jim is an instructor at the Mill Creek YMCA and an
assistant instructor, supporting the Mukilteo YMCA Youth Karate classes, and the
Monroe YMCA Adult Karate class.
