Jay Gravelle – Godan

Senior Sensei for Northwest Budokan -
Master Kise’s Pacific Northwest Dojo.

Background:

Sensei Gravelle first put on a white belt and started studying Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate with Master Fusei Kise at the Camp Zukeran dojo on Okinawa in 1975. During his tenure on Okinawa he worked out 4-6 hours a day, six days a week. He was privileged to spend many hours working out under both Master Kise and Sensei Gingras in the honbu dojo in Okinawa City from 1975 thru 1977. Sensei Gravelle was lucky enough to meet and test under Master Hohan Soken. He was also very privileged to attend two training sessions where Master Soken taught.

After transferring back to the U.S. Sensei Gravelle continued his workouts, but lost touch with Master Kise. In 1990 he started assisting and teaching with The Young Olympians in Tempe, Arizona. In his search for a Shorin-Ryu style close to Matsumura he found one in Chandler, Arizona. In 1992 he joined the Phoenix Kodenkan under the instruction of Sensei Kirk Jaeger and seminars with Shihan Barry Holck in Shorin-Ryu Kobayashi Karate.

Sensei Gravelle was reunited with Master Kise when he visited the United States in 1996. Upon his return to Arizona he started extensive training under Kyoshi John Shipes. The following year he started Master Kise’s Chandler, Arizona dojo. Sense then Sensei Gravelle has attended many karate camps when Master Kise has visited the United States and has visited Okinawa several times in the past years to train with Master Kise and Kyoshi Isao Kise.

In July 2000 Sensei Gravelle moved to Everett, Washington, just north of Seattle. The Northwest Budokan - Master Kise’s Pacific Northwest Dojo, is located at the Mukilteo YMCA.
